I’ve recently been introduced to this saying.

Don’t make waves where none are needed.

It was confusing at first until I realized it meant don’t create unnecessary trouble. While that’s true, I was confused because I did not view it as trouble but simply trying to confront the person for answers that I felt I deserved.

But as I considered it, I realized, do we create trouble with confrontation, or do we simply want answers that should have been given to us in the first place?

Then the thought of, maybe I shouldn’t make waves where it’s not need.

Here’s why:

1: Avoid Conflict

Speaking up in certain situations will sometimes create unnecessary drama rather than fix the problem. This is usually where silence comes in handy when choosing battles. Sometimes, speaking up at a better moment than voicing your opinion in a quiet room is also better.

2: Keeping the Peace

Most of the time, especially during a team collaboration, it’s better to keep the peace for the sake of getting the work done. Making waves will disrupt the workflow and create a hostile work environment for the entire team.

3: Cultural Values

Culture also plays a lot in situations. Don’t create trouble you don’t know about. As kids, we often view life in a black-and-white situation. Unfortunately, the world runs in three colors rather than two: the gray area.

Making waves can be disrespectful to the family that upholds these values. This is especially true when it’s common knowledge that the cycle consistently repeats itself.

It was profoundly inspiring to really dive deeper into the value of this saying. It helped me realize how other people view conflict when it arises.

On the contrary, I’ve learned that not making waves is conforming to a sense of false stability, especially when certain situations keep repeating themselves in a never-ending cycle. Therefore, it’s beneficial at times to make those waves.

You can’t have change without taking the first step towards that path.

We’ll talk soon,

Sweet T.
