Social media, to those who are over the age of technological advancement, will be seen as the worst thing to happen to a generation. In contrast, those born within the technological age will beg to differ.

However, as someone who has a love-hate relationship with social media (or media in general), I hold a particular view of social media.

There’s always pros and cons to everything in life. But what if we use the gray area for social media?

Here’s why:

1: Reality Reset

Overconsumption of social media can leave you worrying about your reputation, even when your phone is off and turned upside down, so you can’t see the screen. This leads most (especially those who are young and just learning about social media) to consume a copious amount of it in a short amount of time.

They basically become addicts who will constantly need their fix.

When we pause our social media consumption, we can open ourselves up to being present and understanding the difference between our personal and public images. These were always meant to be separate, but with social media on the rise and content creators proliferating, we can see that the line between personal and private lives is now heavily blurred.

2: Mental Stability

It’s amusing how our older generations often struggle to comprehend the challenges faced by younger generations today, given that their reputations are closely tied to social media platforms.

When technology was first being introduced, it was easy for us to go home and not have to worry about taking our reputations home with us. It was essentially a get-out-of-jail-free card in real life.

Today, with advanced technology continuing to thrive, once school or work is finished, your reputation will follow you home as well. It’s the constant pull of questions debating your worth and if you’re doing enough.

That is, in no way, healthy for your mental health. Taking a step back, however, will allow your body to understand that you can have the best of both worlds after you know how to interconnect them with healthy boundaries.

3: Work Growth

The secret is out. Advertising to a broader range of consumers works wonders when you are on the same platform as others.

However, even using social media for work purposes will have its boundaries. After a while, your content will dry up, and all of a sudden, you’re like other influencers who stick to the trend to try and seem relevant.

To grow your social media presence is to constantly pause the social media aspect and take a step back to reintroduce and reprioritize your company’s mission and goals to the public.

Nobody likes a brand that constantly changes its message because one set of consumers prefers one type of content over another. It’s untrustworthy and unreliable.

All in all, social media is not as bad as it may seem.

Many individuals use social media platforms for freelancing or turning their passion into a dream career. With a little hope and a lot of consistency, you’ll be unstoppable when you understand both sides of the social media platforms.

On the contrary, social media can be a disease, as bullying is still not eradicated to the fullest. Therefore, please watch what you say and how you say it online to others who are only trying to live their best cyber lives.

Never judge before you understand.

We’ll talk soon,

Sweet T.
